The Community & Economic Development Data Team:
The Community Insights Program is led by the Data Team within Iowa State University’s Community and Economic Development Extension and Outreach Unit. We help communities and organizations turn data into insights and actions. We believe that informed decisions lead to stronger, more resilient places. Through our dashboards, data tools, trainings and publications, we make complex information accessible and useful for local leaders, organizations, and residents across Iowa.
Our team provides expertise in population and demography, social and economic trends, migration, income, wealth and more. We bring technical skills in data analysis, research methods, census and secondary data, geospatial data, GIS, and interactive data visualizations and dashboards. We support communities and organizations in understanding Iowa’s demographic, social, and economic trends; interpreting population and economic indicators; and presenting this information in meaningful ways. Our team also assists with community data collection, visualization, open-source data and mapping technologies. We provide guidance on data literacy, helping local leaders, organizations, and residents learn to access, manipulate, and use data to inform decisions, support planning, and strengthen resilience across Iowa.
